Historic Schaefferstown is calling all hands to help this weekend at Refresh the Farm Day.
Starting Saturday at 8:30am, volunteers are called to help clean up the historic farm. Tasks will include mending fences, replacing a window, cleaning up picnic benches, and otherwise tidying up.
In addition to coffee and donuts in the morning and a hearty lunch of sausage, cabbage, apples, and onions (an old German recipe), helping hands will also get the opportunity to see the farm’s two newest residents, twin goats born earlier this month. The two kids are the offspring of Oreo (mom) and Gabriel (dad).
Oreo is an Alpine goat, a French breed originating in the Alps for milk production. Gabriel is a San Clemente Island goat, considered an extremely rare breed of which only about 800 are left in the world. Dale Zimmerman helps care for the goats in addition to some other animals at the site.
From what we’ve heard, the two little ones have non-stop tail wagging right now (unless they are sleeping). Due to their size, they are able to sneak into places that mom can’t fit, and are often caught napping on the large grindstone at the forebay.
